Water is the origin of life and the secret of its survival; from it Allah made every living thing. It is a mercy of this faith that giving water to people was made one of the greatest doors of reward — a reward that keeps flowing for as long as the water itself flows and people benefit from it.
The Best Charity Is Giving Water
A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: "My mother has died. Will it benefit her if I give charity on her behalf?" He said: "Yes." The man asked: "Which charity is best?" He replied: "Giving water." This hadith is a cornerstone in establishing the standing of water among all acts of goodness — when asked which charity was best of all, the Prophet (peace be upon him) named this one above the rest.
Whoever digs a well from which a person or an animal drinks will have its reward written for him for as long as the water runs through it.
Why Is It Considered an Ongoing Charity?
Sadaqah Jariyah is charity whose reward continues long after the deed itself has ended, and a well is one of its clearest examples. It serves the one who drinks, the one who makes wudu, the farmer and the herder — one generation after another. Everyone who drinks from it or benefits from it adds to the record of good deeds of the person who made it possible, even many years after they have passed away.
What a Well Changes in a Village
In many of the villages where we work, women and children walk long distances every single day to collect water from contaminated sources. When a well is dug inside the village, it is not only the water source that changes — an entire way of life changes with it. Girls go back to school, waterborne illness falls away, the land is farmed again, and families stay put instead of being driven to leave.
This is why, at Hayah Foundation, we document every project with photographs and video — so the fruit of what you gave reaches you and you see it with your own eyes, and know that your impact is still flowing.
